…is an educational programme for school classes from the Wadden Sea countries Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands. By providing international “Wadden experiences”, the IWSS wants to carry the idea of a trans-boundary approach to the protection of the Wadden Sea into the young generations.
The IWSS was established in 2003 by the “Trilateral Cooperation on the Protection of the Wadden Sea” and nature conservation organizations.
On school trips and field excursions in the ”boundless“ Wadden Sea, children and teenager get to know their common natural and cultural heritage in several ways and learn to see the Wadden Sea in an international context.
A network of environmental education centres along the coast and on the islands of the Danish, German and Dutch Wadden Sea regions offers a variety of attractive destinations with different activities around nature and landscape, culture and history and national as well as international protection of the Wadden Sea.
Common principles and standards of environmental education form the basis of all IWSS-activities. The participating educational institutions of all Wadden sea regions regularly meet to exchange experience and trends about Wadden Sea education and jointly develop new activities and projects.
The comprehensive “travel service” supports the easy organisation of school trips to the national and international Wadden Sea with information about legal, organizational and practical aspects of school trip planning as well as detailed information and useful addresses for all IWSS-destinations.
More than 2000 pupils have participated in school trips and field excursions with an IWSS-programme so far. And many more children, teenager and adults get insight into the international Wadden Sea during regular activities of the IWSS partner centres. Teaching and learning materials of the IWSS are also used in classroom teaching.
