Of Whaling & Wonderful Beaches

Nature and culture experiences on the whaler´s island

Scenery & Surroundings

Visitors of the Danish Wadden Sea´s greatest island are not only attracted by its endless beaches but also by theis land´s interesting and long history. For a long time, Rømø´s inhabitants earned their living by whaling off Greenland. This was a dangerous but well paid job that lead to great wealth on the island. The noble houses of the captains and other signs of wealth can still be found on the island today. The Naturcenter Tønnisgård is located in one of these old, thatched-roofed captains' houses. The centre is point of departure for a broad variety of activities related to the nature, culture and history of the island. On Rømø, nature and culture always go hand in hand. Therefore, the centre´s programme especially focuses on human life in and with nature, today and in former times.
