









Exciting culture and natur experiences in the young city at the Wadden Sea

Located directly at the Jade Bay, one of the few great bays in the Wadden Sea, the naval city of Wilhelmshaven offers an ideal starting point for exciting class trips and encountures with the local nature and culture.
The "young" city has been founded in 1869 and has had tight ties with the history of the navy and shipping in Germany ever since. Numerous exhibitions and museums offering sights into the diverse history of Wilhelmshaven; showing its first economic bloom, followed by the down fall and destruction of the town as well as the development to current-day international navy.
The "Wattenmeerhaus Wilhelmshaven" offers exciting expeditions into the Wadden Sea: ranging from an interactive exhibition and exciting mudflat walks to laboratory-programmes, bird watching and bike-trips.
It is especially worthwile to undertake a day-trip to the island of Spiekeroog with an original crab-cutter. On the way there you will pass by a seal sandbank. Furthermore there will be net-fishing and on the island you will find time to do extensive walks along the beach which will round off your North Sea experience.
Two group accommodations and a houseboat offer accommodation for groups. The next yourth hostel is located in Jever (appx. 20 km afar).
By train via Bremen and Oldenburg (Oldb) to Wilhelsmhaven station. Further with public bus or transfer shuttle to the accommodation. (Travel time from Bremen: appx. 1.5 hours.) We recommend to rent bikes at the location.

1st day:
Arrival around noon, first orientation. Later: greeting and introduction to the programme of the National Park Centre "Das Wattenmeerhaus".
2nd day:
Am: Mudflat excursion at "Südstrand" followed by a water-lab programme in the "Wattenmeerhaus". Pm: Leisure time; opportunity to visit the numerous musuems and exhibitions. As an alternative you can attend the videoproject of the Wattenmeerhaus.
3rd day:
Day-trip to the island of Spiekeroog. With an expert guide you will walk to Spiekeroog over the mudflats and then retun by ship. On the ship you get to participate in net-fishing and you will pass by seal sandbanks. On Spiekeroog itself you will have time to explore the island, walk along the beach and participate in driftline and dune expeditions. Of course there willl be some freetime to spend on your own pleasure. In the evening there will be crafting with the items collected from the driftline.
4th day:
Nature and culture around the Jade Bay: Accompanied by a guide you can under take a bike-trip to the historical Banter fishing village and to Mariensiel including a visit to the salt marsh path close by Cäciliengroden. Continuing the trip alongside the salt marshes of the Jade Bay to Dangast and back to Wilhelmshaven.
5th day:
Visit to the research centre "Terramare" or to the Common Tern colonie at lake Banter (set up by the ornithological station "Helgoland") Later: Possible futher visits to museums. Departure.
